The Schofield Watch Company

Group Project

Working alongside the Schofield Watch Company (SWC), the brief here was to design a watch box for their new B6 watch model. Engaging with the owner of the SWC himself, Giles Ellis, enabled us to grasp his core design principals and incorporate them into the box’s design. With many of his designs inspired by the British coastline all while encompassing beautiful Japanese elements, the direction in which we would take our watch box design became clear.

The design we created perfectly encompassed the SWC’s values and integrity.

Looking at old-fashioned ship lanterns, we used this as a basis for our watch box concept. The watch itself detailed a porthole design with a mermaid feature, reaffirming its links to the coast and ocean. Something such as an old lantern had strong yet not so obvious and overt links to the coast; it is something that has that 'treasure' feel with the bright shining elements of brass that would have been used.

The opening of the watch box features an iris design. The iris mechanism is used in cameras as a means of light control. We found this opening method to be something unconventional yet attractive, sophisticated yet highly intuitive. As the shutter elements collapse in on themselves, the design is highly space-saving and effective in opening and closing, making it wide enough to perfectly encase the B6.
